Gray Scale-Exploring Graphite Lettering from Small and Delicate to Big & Bold
Spring Workshop with Amity Parks
Sponsored by the Mysticalligraphers

April 7-8, 2018 (Note correction of dates)
9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Coastal Lodge on 637 Pequot Trail, Stonington

Using only the humble pencil and its other graphite cousins allows us to practice ways of creating dynamic layouts even within the limited grayscale palette. By exploring the most striking of contrasts – scale – we will challenge ourselves to create powerful layouts focused on the relationship between large and small design elements.

Beginning with a series of exercises we will study a range of pencil lettering techniques, from formal drawn Roman capitals to a variety of more modern and casual hands. We’ll then explore some non-traditional graphite techniques that allow for bold, large scale lettering designs. Finally, we’ll combine these two elements in a variety of layout and design exercises that will lead us to the creation of works that reflect both the delicate beauty and dynamic contrasts possible within the graphite family.

The course will introduce the fundamentals of the foundational lettering style, writing with a metal nib, working with goauche & more.

Foundational Sample

While the italic hand is very popular & most often identified with calligraphy, many, including the world-renowned Sheila Waters, are firm believers that calligraphers that start with the foundational hand will have greater control & experience faster development of their lettering skills. We will also create a Japanese-style book that highlights the techniques learned in class. This is an excellent class for young students, adults and teenagers.

There will be homework assigned for non-class days. Please carve out time to complete the homework assignments. Time spent lettering on non-class days will greatly enhance what you get out of the class.

Cost: $120. Materials fee to the instructor: $35. Materials will include your nibs, ink, nib holders, paper, erasers, ets. Please do not purchase any supplies ahead of time. Feel free to bring any calligraphy supplies you already have (if you have any) to the first class to add to our discussion. Though bring a notebook for your notes.
