Kids writing calligraphy

Uncial lettering

Learning calligraphy is a wonderful way to encourage a love of writing! I've been offering calligraphy to young students for the last four years and been so thrilled at how even reluctant students have fallen in love with the beauty and challenge of learning calligraphy. It develops important skills like careful observation, fine motor skills, patience with handwriting, quiet practice and concentration. They don't realize they are getting all those benefits, they just enjoy making really cool letters!

The course will introduce the fundamentals of the uncial lettering style, writing with a metal nib, & creating projects with their calligraphy skills. We will also create a book that highlights the techniques learned in class.

This is an excellent class for young students, from 3rd to 8th grade. It is an excellent opportunity to take the class with your child though an adult is not required to attend.

Cost: $70. Materials fee: $18.

November Folded Pen Workshop with Carol Dubosch

Carol DuBosch, a noted calligrapher from Portland Oregon, will be traveling to Mystic this fall to teach the class Ruling Pen Adventures. Carol's passion for calligraphy began in 1957 when, at the age of twelve, she began studying letter forms. She relates that she has followed that "inky path" ever since, studying, teaching and promoting calligraphy. In her correspondence to Mysticalligraphers, Carol writes that " the folded pen is the most exciting tool right now," and she highly recommends this workshop over others she teaches. In this class we will make our own pens, then use them to write an exciting contemporary script. Carol is a member of The Portland Society for Calligraphy. If you visit their members' art page, you can view several pieces of her art.

Level: All Levels

Carol teaches calligraphy and lettering arts at Portland Community College and privately with ongoing seminar classes in Portland, Oregon. She also travels nationwide to teach workshops
