COPPERPLATE: An Introduction to Script Lettering

The course will introduce script lettering in the copperplate style.   We'll use an oblique nib holder, pointed nibs, ink and gouache.   Previous calligraphy experience is not required for this course.   We will also create a handmade book featuring the lettering learned in the course. Developing Control in Calligraphy: A One-Day Workshop Learning the Uncial Hand

This one-day workshop will introduce the Celtic lettering style known as uncial. Found in the Book of Kells and Lindisfarne Gospels, this beautiful, circular lettering is an excellent opportunity to strengthen basic lettering skills and gain more control over the pen. Participants will progress through three different writing tools as a way to evaluate their lettering and develop more accurate shapes. The multi-step process Debby will present for learning uncial can be used for mastering other calligraphic hands as well. We will also transform our practice into a book with a Japanese style stab binding at the end of the day. No calligraphy experience is needed. Cost: $75. $10 materials fee payable to instructor that day.

FLOURISHING: The Decorative Side of Drawing

This 3-week class will introduce the concept of flourishing. We will analyze and experiment with what forms, techniques, exercises and analyses of what makes a flourish beautiful and effective. Come learn Blackletter Calligraphy which is also known as the Gothic style! It is a classic, dramatic lettering style and a great way to introduce yourself to the broad edge nib. Calligrapher Debby Reelitz will guide you through the basics and provide you with writing tools and paper to create your own dramatic Gothic letters. Space is limited, registration is required. Introduction to Chinese Calligraphy

Lorelei Chang was born and raised in China. In January 2009, Her work was a Chinese Calligraphy award winner at the Tokyo Museum. The workshop introduces you to the one of the most beautiful Chinese ancient fine arts, the Chinese calligraphy which has thousands of years of history. Chinese calligraphy is not only a practical technique for writing Chinese characters, but also a unique oriental art of expression, a tool to help ease physicaly and mental tension, reduce stress and learn discipline. You will learn some basic elements, strokes and fundamental techniques of Chinese calligraphy brush work through this class. We will teach you to create your own piece of Chinese calligraphy on the traditional rice paper to take it home. Call: 860-648-1825



Hand Carving Letters and Symbols into Stone

Although this weekend class will be geared toward beginners, all skill levels are welcome. There will be plenty of time for one on one instruction and questions.   This class is an excellent introduction to carving traditional Roman V-cut letters in stone (both days recommended).   We will be covering basic carving techniques for both incised lettering and simple bas-relief forms.

Gail is co-president of Mysticalligraphers.  She has studied calligraphy for over a decade, taking two year-long master classes with Reggie Ezell.  She has also studied with noted calligraphers Peter Thornton, Gwen Weaver, Nancy Culmone, Lisa Engelbrecht, and Victoria Pittman.  Gail worked for a year calligraphing the signage for the Mystic Noank Library.  Her works can be viewed there and at guild and gallery shows.
