COPPERPLATE: An Introduction to Script Lettering
The course will introduce script lettering in the copperplate style. We'll use an oblique nib holder, pointed nibs, ink and gouache. Previous calligraphy experience is not required for this course. We will also create a handmade book featuring the lettering learned in the course.
Cost: $120. Materials fee of $30 includes all the supplies necessary for class.
UNCIAL: An Introduction to an Irish Calligraphic Style
Learning calligraphy is a wonderful way to encourage a love of writing! I've been offering calligraphy to young students for the last four years and been so thrilled at how even reluctant students have fallen in love with the beauty and challenge of learning calligraphy. It develops important skills like careful observation, fine motor skills, patience with handwriting, quiet practice and concentration. They don't realize they are getting all those benefits, they just enjoy making really cool letters!
The course will introduce the fundamentals of the uncial lettering style, writing with a metal nib, & creating projects with their calligraphy skills. We will also create a book that highlights the techniques learned in class.
Cost: $80. Materials fee: $18.
INTRODUCTION TO CALLIGRAPHY
The course will introduce the fundamentals of the foundational lettering style, writing with a metal nib, working with goauche & more.
While the italic hand is very popular & most often identified with calligraphy, many, including the world-renowned Sheila Waters, are firm believers that calligraphers that start with the foundational hand will have greater control & experience faster development of their lettering skills. We will also create a Japanese-style book that highlights the techniques learned in class. This is an excellent class for adults and teenagers.
Cost: $120. Materials fee to the instructor: $15. Please do not purchase any supplies ahead of time. Feel free to bring any calligraphy supplies you already have (if you have any) to the first class to add to our discussion, but supplies will be ordered at the first class and available the second week. Debby will supply the materials you need the first week. Though bring a notebook for your notes.
