LETTERING IN THE ROUND: A workshop on circles and spirals
LEARN CALLIGRAPHY: A Two-Day Workshop Learning the Uncial Hand
This two-day workshop will introduce the Celtic lettering style known as uncial. Found in the Book of Kells and Lindisfarne Gospels, this beautiful, circular lettering is an excellent opportunity to learn basic lettering skills and gain more control over the pen. Participants will progress through three different writing tools as a way to evaluate their lettering and develop more accurate shapes.
We will also transform our practice into a book with a Japanese style stab binding at the end of the workshop. No calligraphy experience is needed. Class Fee: $120 Materials fee: $28 includes all materials and tools needed. You will go home with a basic set of calligraphy supplies.
INTRO to ILLUMINATION
Come learn the art of illumination! Students will learn how to make beautiful, decorated letters and borders, even fanciful creatures like dragons and medieval characters. Proper tools, materials, paper and equipment will be discussed and used. Skills needed for illumination will be broken into small steps that build on each other. Each class introduces critical concepts. Homework is designed to practice these skills leading students to be able to look at historical examples of manuscripts and create their own interpretation of an historical design. There will also be instruction on how to correct mistakes.
Cost: $150. Materials fee to the instructor: $40. The materials fee will include a high quality materials including: paint brush, gouache (opaque watercolor paints), palettes, nibs, nib holder, sumi ink and paper. Feel free to bring any calligraphy equipment you already have, though none are required. Previous painting, drawing or calligraphic experience is NOT required.
INTRO to COPPERPLATE
The course will introduce script lettering in the copperplate style. We'll use an oblique nib holder, pointed nibs, ink and gouache. Previous calligraphy experience is not required for this course. We will also create a handmade book featuring the lettering learned in the course.
Cost: $120. Materials fee of $35 includes all the supplies necessary for class (collected during first class). You will have a basic set of supplies for copperplate: oblique nib holder, set of 5 nibs, ink, ink holder, pipette, practice paper and guidelines.

GILDING: How to use gold leaf and metal foils
Over the course of three classes, we will learn about gold leaf, its role in illuminated manuscripts, both historical and contemporary, and of course, learn how to use it ourselves. We will be using a modern gilding base, not the traditional gesso. We will work on both flat and dimensional bases. We'll also touch on metal leaf and its possibilities. Calligraphy experience is not required. The techniques taught would be valuable for any artist looking to incorporate genuine gold into their artworks.
Cost: $80; materials fee of $35 includes, gilding base, 6 sheets of 23K patent gold, paper and additional art supplies. A book of 23K patent gold (25 sheets) is available for $65 (cost subject to change based on current price of gold). Registration required by October 30th to ensure adequate supplies.
Introduction to Chinese Calligraphy
Lorelei Chang was born and raised in China. In January 2009, Her work was a Chinese Calligraphy award winner at the Tokyo Museum. The workshop introduces you to the one of the most beautiful Chinese ancient fine arts, the Chinese calligraphy which has thousands of years of history. Chinese calligraphy is not only a practical technique for writing Chinese characters, but also a unique oriental art of expression, a tool to help ease physicaly and mental tension, reduce stress and learn discipline. You will learn some basic elements, strokes and fundamental techniques of Chinese calligraphy brush work through this class. We will teach you to create your own piece of Chinese calligraphy on the traditional rice paper to take it home. Call: 860-648-1825
Hand Carving Letters and Symbols into Stone
Gail is co-president of Mysticalligraphers. She has studied calligraphy for over a decade, taking two year-long master classes with Reggie Ezell. She has also studied with noted calligraphers Peter Thornton, Gwen Weaver, Nancy Culmone, Lisa Engelbrecht, and Victoria Pittman. Gail worked for a year calligraphing the signage for the Mystic Noank Library. Her works can be viewed there and at guild and gallery shows.
